Happy New Year's!

Tomorrow is not only New Year's Day, but also Haiti's Independence Day!  Tomorrow morning everyone will be eating their mother's version of Pumpkin Soup, and all the fixings are piled high in the market.
Every morning the girls and I have been reading from Matthew, through the life of Jesus.  Yesterday morning we started the Beatitudes, which included a million interruptions from Sofie of "What does mourn mean? What does humble me? What does persecuted mean?"

Once we finally worked through those, Jesus launched into his salt and light sermon.

That hit home a little easier with Lily and Sofie.
You are the salt of the earth.

But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be fixed?
It's not good for anything anymore, but to be thrown out and stepped on.

You are the light of the world.

A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. You don't light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  You put it on a stand so that it gives light to everyone.

So in the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
As we head into a new year, the simple truth is one the church has often gotten away from.

We cannot lose our saltiness, friends. Can't be worthless salt. Can't be blanketed lamps.
In a world that's getting more and more dark and dull, it's not enough to be light if we don't shine before men. It's not enough to be salt, if we have lost our flavor.

There is so much at stake, isn't there, this year and always.

Be Salt, dear ones, be Light.
Come what may and come what has, Happiest of New Years to you and yours...knowing not the future, but trusting fully in He who holds it.
