"I see that driving to the moon is very dangerous. But, there are still some people that walked on the moon, such as Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman. Now, they famous very."
Yes, it's that time of the year again, when our Christian ESL textbooks spend several pages on "Space Exploration." I don't know why this has been deemed an important part of first year ESL curriculum, but every year I consider skipping over it, I remember just how FUN it is, for the guys and for me.
This is literally the first time in their lives that my students have studied or even really heard about space, planets, stars or even earth, making it a very fun and interesting unit. Masson blessed me with the above quote, and the next day we tried to talk about what OTHER things Abraham Lincoln did that made him famous.
The biggest questions so far this year: How does the moon keep shrinking, finally dying, and then be resurrected from the dead each month? How can it possibly be that the sun is so big, if it is just a little dot? Why on earth would people spend their lives and money studying space when there are so many problems here? Which scientist first discovered Earth? Why aren't we upside down half the time? Why do solar eclipses "cook your head"? Wow, it's been interesting...
But, like every year, the best take-away is the students' awe over their awesome Creator, who in His great power and wisdom and love somehow made Earth the only place in the whole wide universe that is PERFECT and beautiful...And still, with the stars as his footstool and the galaxies as his horizon, draws close to us, and hears and cares every time we lift our voices to Him.
It IS wild...what a miracle. THE WHOLE UNIVERSE, and He intimately knows each tear drop of Saccanville, each cry of my heart, and still has a perfect and beautiful plan for MY life. Praise the Lord...
