news, not truth

A small shift in thinking really sank in yesterday on our front porch swing. The house was full of kids and dogs and piles of crumbs and laughter, and I stepped out into the sunshine to creak those chains for a few quieter minutes...my favorite part of a Saturday.

The front porch swing is the last place I sat with my father, knowing it very well could be and wanting the hour to swing on forever. The place baby Emma could always be content. The place so much of our school happens. Where all the teenage phone calls take place. Where I was sitting when I received life-shattering news once. Where I swing when hurting friends come over and need a space from all the little ears.

It's swung on through a lot of good and bad and sweet and broken, and sitting on it I have received so much news.

But news, I read there yesterday, is not truth.

News, even scientifically proven, even based on tested results, even seen with our own eyes, even spoken by those we trust, isn't factoring God into the equation. Impossible news of impossible situations : health, kids, jobs, marriages, family, current events, all the news....

It's news. But that is not the same as truth.

We have an access to truth that transcends the news. Truth factors God into all of our equations, which makes all the true difference.

I've received a lotta news on that squeaky worn porch swing, but the TRUTH I have often failed to overlay is that He IS making a way. He IS faithful forever, more than we will ever know. He IS with you. He is our hiding place, the place to lay our heads, the place to firm our feet, the place to root our truth, the place to find TRUTH.

Whatever news you're dealing with today, gather it up and bring it to the throne of truth...where God sees, where God IS, where God moves and where God carries our news in tender, faithful hands for His glory and our good.
