When we first came to Haiti, I thought the universal return to school day thing was strange and stressful. In what country does the President pick and change and pick and change and pick the first day of school for EVERY school in the country?
In Haiti.
And we've come to love it.
Last month, we were all searching for all the books on our book lists. Everyone I knew was doing the same thing, swapping good vendor information and trading from books from last year.
Last week, everyone was staying up late to polish off uniforms. Including me!
And this morning, Haiti is proud together--in a good way--a sentiment that doesn't befall us often. As every mother pinched off the last bow and polished the last shoe, marveling at how time does fly, how tall they've gotten, how cute they look, everyone faces the reality of hope.
If we can give our children knowledge...if they can grasp more than we were able to...if they can learn and grow and study together, tomorrow has to be better. Children continue, in any country, to be the future.
And today, the future is off in plaids and pigtails, each happy to be a part of it.
Lily says that she's going to school, she is four, going to Pillatre, that she's going to miss Mommy, and that she will also miss Aunt Lisa, Uncle Adam, Grandpa, Daddy, and her cat :)
Aw she looks great :) Happy first day Lily!
