With my sister and brother-in-law living in Denver and my heart just broken over the recent shooting, I just finished watching a powerful interview with a young man, Marcus Weaver, who was in the theater, lost his friend, and had bullets removed from his arm.
"You've been through a traumatic experience, to say the least" he was asked. "You're injured. You're friend is missing. How are you even processing all this?"
"You know," Weaver said, looking down, almost as if he had hoped the question wouldn't be asked, "This whole incident has restored my faith and the things I know are true. This might be something that might change the way we think about things. Maybe we should be more secure about our thinking, with our children." He paused, and I wasn't sure he was going to actually say what it seemed like he wanted to say on national television. But then he continued... "It's totally strengthened my faith in the Lord.
"God protected me," he said, finally getting bold. "And I don't know why some people were protected and some people were not, but at the same time, I really feel that His grace was sufficient.
"I ask that we take a step back and reflect on this."
His plea that we be "more secure about our thinking", about "what is true"...about the Lord is just resounding in me. While this incident hasn't brought me back to the path of knowing Him to be True in my life as it has Weaver's, Matt's and my discussion just yesterday about being more bold about our faith--being more bold about the "simple Truth"--is being echoed today.
I couldn't do anything in Aurora. But I have the Truth, and His love, and we have to be more SECURE in Him as we live out those things.
We have to live out Light more boldly in the face of darkness being lived out so boldly.
We have to treat darkness, twistedness, evil and perversion of that which is good like it's the PLAGUE to holiness before our God, not like it's entertainment.
We have to be loving in extreme and shocking ways in response to hate being displayed in extreme and shocking ways.
We have to be sharers of the new life He has to offer in a world that is dying.
In light of such extreme darkness, Weavers is reminded of nothing but the truth. In the darkness of this moment, of this life, if we've got the Light, we've got to be it. Better than we are. Better than I am.
I didn't hear this interview so I'm glad you shared this. So glad we have a God who is close to our suffering and can bring healing and beauty even from darkness.
